Cottage Project
"In 2007 we purchased a rundown cottage in Cropwell Bishop on a challenging plot with a view to renovating and extending it. Ultimately, we ended up demolishing it and building our own Grand Design as a result of very careful, knowledgeable and considered guidance from Lee, requiring upmost trust and confidence in him and his ability by us and our mortgage lender.
At the outset, we had no personal experience of planning or building, only what we had seen on TV, so we set about finding ourselves an architect to help guide us through the various processes involved. No one we knew could recommend an architect so we contacted several via the RIBA website; Lee Tombs was one of this number and after conducting a mini telephone interview with him we agreed to meet him at the property. We liked Lee immediately; he was calm, professional and reassuring even though he was stood in the midst of a very dilapidated site.
As part of our architect selection process, Lee took us to see some of his previous work and to meet some of his previous and existing clients. His work was excellent, his previous/present clients effusive so we agreed to work together. Lee project managed the entire process for us; he designed the plans for the build, dealt with the council's planners and building inspectors, the surveyor, the builder, subcontractors and the build. The design process was fun, exciting and enthralling, the planning stage went without hitch and the build itself was a joy. At each stage we expected stress or problems – because that's what we had seen on TV – but there was none; and each stage we expected difficulty or delay because again that's what we had seen on TV – but again there was none.
At all times we found Lee to be helpful, professional, knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Throughout the project we came into contact with various professionals, from the building inspector, the surveyor to the electricians, plumbers and builder, and they all said the same thing, that they had rarely seen such high quality drawings and scheme, or worked with such a professional architect. We think the evidence speaks for itself; two and a half years after purchasing a dilapidated site we now have the privilege of living in a very beautiful home, which three years on still receives compliments from locals and visitors. We went through the entire self build process with no problems, no stress, no delays and no difficulties all because of Lee Tombs and his professionalism; it was a privilege and delight to work with him. It is for these reasons that Lee was guest of honour at our house warming party and why we presented him with a trophy with 'The greatest architect in the world' engraved on it – because it is all true! Says it all really, doesn't it?"
